The “Chinese Notary Knowledge” lecture was held in Sydney, focusing on legal matters related to wills and inheritance

On the morning of July 24, 2025, a public legal lecture themed on “Chinese Notarization Knowledge” was successfully held at the Boronia Grove Community Centre in Epping, Sydney. The lecture was hosted by G’Day Neighbour and co-organized by the Henan Provincial Association of Australia and the China Notary Service Center, attracting nearly 100 Chinese residents to attend.

The event specially invited Director Guo Xueping, a senior notary with 35 years of experience from China, as the keynote speaker. She provided an in-depth explanation on legal topics such as cross-border will execution, domestic inheritance confirmation, and Chinese property distribution. The lecture focused on practical issues that Australian permanent residents of Chinese descent often encounter when dealing with domestic assets, sparking widespread attention and discussion.

Focusing on practical issues: how to legally and efficiently handle Chinese property

With the increasing prevalence of cross-border family structures, many Chinese individuals in Australia are facing legal predicaments where “they are not physically present in China, yet their assets are located there.” The lecture revolves around core issues such as “how to legally and effectively execute a will” and “what key materials are involved in domestic inheritance,” covering common challenges such as personal property inheritance, the domestic applicability of notarized documents, and proof of kinship.

The keynote speaker pointed out that many disputes did not originate from the assets themselves, but rather from improper preparation of documents and unclear procedures, which led to the inability to effectively enforce inheritance rights. She emphasized that overseas Chinese should carry out legal planning as early as possible, improve their document system, and make full use of the remote video notarization mechanism established between China and Australia to reduce time and cost burdens.

The audience responded positively, with interactive Q&A sessions focusing on practical issues

During the Q&A session after the lecture, participants raised questions about common legal obstacles in inheritance, including whether a will made overseas is valid in China, how multiple heirs allocate property, and how to confirm inheritance rights if parents did not leave a will before their death. The keynote speaker responded to each question by combining typical cases and provided practical advice on material preparation, process estimation, and risk prevention.

According to the organizers, many participants expressed that they had gained a lot after the meeting, especially in terms of establishing a clear understanding framework on how to properly handle domestic real estate, bank assets, and equity inheritance issues through legal means without returning to their home country.

With multi-party collaboration and support, we will promote the implementation of community legal services

Councilor Chen Xiao of Parramatta City Council was invited to attend the event and delivered a speech, fully acknowledging the positive role played by this lecture in promoting the popularization of legal knowledge and enhancing community awareness of the rule of law. He stated that with the evolution of the immigrant community structure, the demand for cross-border legal services among overseas Chinese is increasing, and the government will continue to support the extension of such services to the grassroots level of the community.

This event also received assistance and support from Vice President Xue of the Henan Association in Australia and several volunteers, ensuring orderly venue management and smooth information dissemination, demonstrating the collaborative power of community organizations in serving residents.

Subsequent arrangements

It is reported that the organizer plans to continue launching a series of lectures and targeted legal consultation services centered around themes such as “cross-border family legal planning”, “handling of Chinese real estate”, and “foreign-related marriage and inheritance” in the second half of the year, continuously providing legal information access channels and practical support for Chinese people in Australia.
